A large portion of the course takes place on the renowned Ice Age Trail located 60 miles southeast of Madison in the southern reaches of the picturesque Kettle Moraine State Park.

The Shootout for Soldiers is a 24 hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members. The event is fun. It’s not a tournament, nor is it about recruiting. The event is all about supporting those who serve our country.
There are 24, 1-hour games in a row. Each team plays for an hour, and is a member of either Stars or Stripes – we inform you of whether you’re Stars or Stripes, as well as your time slot, a few weeks before the event. The score is cumulative – last year Stars topped Stripes 214-210 in Long Island. A wide variety of activities go on at the event as well, so we encourage folks of all ages to come out and attend!
Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund is proud to be one of the non-profit partners for this event that helps fund our Ranger Assistance Programs for the men and families of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

About the San Francisco Marathon
The San Francisco Marathon is a loop course, taking runners on a journey around the city, hitting gorgeous locales and iconic landmarks all along the way. Starting at the world famous Ferry Building, racers head along the Embarcadero, with the beautiful San Francisco bay on their right. From there they pass through Fisherman’s Wharf and through the Marina. Next runners head up and back across the Golden Gate Bridge and down through the Presidio, along the Pacific Ocean. A tour of the beautiful Golden Gate Park follows, and after some turns and curves through the trees and around the lakes, runners empty out onto the historic and very colorful Haight street. The course takes some loops through the Mission, Potrero, and Mission Bay Districts, heads by numerous charming little parks, then heads up towards AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. And then it’s just a home stretch, under the fancy new Bay Bridge and back up to the Ferry Building.
There will be no advanced tickets sales. All tickets will be available the day of the event at the gate. Suggested donation for Adults 18 & Over is $10.00.

On behalf of the Lead The Way Fund, we would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who came out to Manhasset High School to support us on Saturday at our Lacrosse Day For Heroes “Regs Rock” Event! It was an amazing day of lacrosse, between two of the best High School lacrosse teams in the country, and a great turnout in honor of an incredible person, Sgt. James J. Regan.
Regardless of the outcome of the games, ALL of the boys on the Chaminade & Manhasset Varsity and Junior Varsity teams played their hearts out, and we know they made Jimmy proud. A special congratulations to Ryan Lukacovic from Chaminade for having been bestowed the honor of wearing Jimmy’s #19 jersey this year. Well-deserved!
We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at the Manhasset Public Schools, Chaminade High School and the Manhasset Booster Club for their generosity and assistance in continuing to make this day happen. The day went off without a hitch. Thank you to the Chaminade & Manhasset coaching staff for their unwaivering support in preserving Jimmy’s legacy. And thank you to Emory Parker for singing the National Anthem and Tim Burke for playing the Bag Pipes, they both did a great job!
Thanks again to MSG Varsity for their great coverage of the event; to Newsday for their beautiful article; to Geoff Walter at Mineola Patch for the great coverage and photos; and to the Manhasset Press for always supporting us!

CMC Overview
The Civilian Military Combine (“CMC”) is the premier race event in the fast growing obstacle course adventure race space. CMC provides the best designed, most exhilarating and unique format of any race available to the public. Designed for all level athletes to test strength, endurance and agility, CMC’s race day structure consists of the adrenaline pumping strength element called “The PIT” transitioning into an exhilarating military grade obstacle course race strategically positioned throughout. The difficulty of the CMC competition is determined by the competitor and attracts both weekend warriors looking for the ultimate challenge as well as competitive athlete looking to win.
The PIT
At the Civilian Military Combine the PIT is the inspirational start of the race where each heat of roughly 100 competitors charge into an area size of a football field surrounded by cheering fans and motivating music. The PIT is designed to be the great equalizer by leveling the playing field between power athletes and endurance runners to determine the best overall conditioned athlete. It consists of 4 basic movements: 2-body weight resistance and 2 with light weight resistance:
The Race
The Civilian Military Combine race takes place over 5 mile course with obstacles and natural terrain. Designed to test participants’ endurance, this race is unlike any mud run they’ve been in before. Taking place after completion of the lifting pit, the race includes massive military obstacles, strategically positioned to put participants’ athletic skills to the test. CMC has designed its race to put endurance and strength athletes on equal footing.
The golf portion of the event is now closed. Please register for the dinner only portion and event sponsorships. Thank you for your support to make this event a success.

Dear Friends and Supporters of the U.S. Army Rangers,
The Lead The Way Fund is excited to announce that Registration is now open for the 6th Annual Lead The Way Fund Golf Outing on Thursday, September 20th 2012 at the Plandome Country Club. With over 400 participants last year, there is no doubt that this year’s tournament will go off bigger and better than ever! Please come join us for a day full of fun and patriotism as we celebrate and honor our U.S. Army Rangers.
This golf outing is a great opportunity to give back to those who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedom and the quality of life we are privileged to enjoy here in the United States of America. Those of you who have attended in the past will undoubtedly recall many of the moments that make this yearly event so special. Participants will enjoy a round of golf at the Plandome Country Club or Sands Point Village Club, a lovely brunch as well as an evening full of cocktails, dinner, awards and wonderful live and silent auctions.

The Lead The Way Fund was created in honor of our friend and teammate Sgt. James J. Regan (“Jimmy”) who was killed in Iraq while serving with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Jimmy was a star in all senses of the word. Growing up in Manhasset Long Island, Jimmy excelled both academically and athletically at Chaminade High School and later became a scholarship lacrosse player at Duke University. After graduating from Duke, Jimmy answered the greater calling within him and in 2004 enlisted in the United States Army. There he graduated 1st in his Basic Training Class out of 400 soldiers and later earned himself a place amongst the coveted, revered and feared Army Rangers. Jimmy went on to serve his Country with pride and valor for two tours in the rugged hills of Afghanistan and two tours in the city streets of Iraq.
On February 9, 2007, while serving what was to be his final deployment to the Middle East before leaving the Army, Jimmy was tragically struck down in Baqubah, Iraq. As expected, he was a decorated soldier, earning a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and several other medals marking his service and leadership in some of the darkest corners on some of the darkest days. With his all-American smile and un-matched character, Jimmy Regan was everything that is beautiful about the human soul and everything that is great about our Country.
The Lead The Way Fund, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization established by the Regan Family to raise funds in support of families of U.S. Army Rangers who have died, have been disabled or who are currently serving in harm’s way around the world. The average annual income of an Army Ranger is below $25,000, typically leaving them with insufficient means to provide for their families if they are killed or disabled. The funds raised by the Lead The Way Fund at events like the “A Run Down Hero Highway” provide spouses and children of deceased, disabled or active duty Rangers with assistance for health and wellness and other financial aid programs.
On November 15th we register at 9:03am (the time denoting when UA Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower at the World Trade Center), and then we run for Jimmy and the countless others like him who provide the blanket of freedom we sleep so soundly under. We will make our way down the Hudson River Park, past Ground Zero with our eyes on the Statue of Liberty. This swath of lower Manhattan on West St. which many of our friends and family walked down to escape the terror of 9/11 is sacred ground and affectionately deemed… “Hero Highway.” There is no better place to honor the life of Jimmy Regan and the sacrifice of our soldiers.
Please forward this along to anyone you think would have an interest in partaking in this event or in donating to the Lead the Way Fund. We hope you can come out to join us!

All The Lead the Way Lacrosse Day of Heroes activities are schedule to proceed as normal with one exception.
Due to restrictions placed by the Federal Aviation Authority and Port Authority of New York, the U.S. Special Operations Daggers and Rangers Parachute Jump at the Lacrosse Day of Heroes is canceled.
ALL OTHER EVENTS OF THE DAY WILL PROCEED AS SCHEDULED!!!
The U.S. Special Operations Daggers and Rangers Parachute Jump will be re-scheduled at a future Lead the Way Fund event.
Details:
Both Authorities are expecting a drastic increase in the amount of international air traffic over Long Island this weekend. Flights which had been cancelled due to the Iceland volcano ash clouds will be resuming tomorrow and the descent and ascent paths could be dangerously close to the altitude of the Daggers and Rangers performance. In addition, flight schedules in and out of JFK airport are already compromised due to the re-surfacing of one of their main runways. This will result in further delays over Long Island as planes await the okay for landing.
We sincerely regret the disappointment our supporters will undoubtedly feel, but in the interest of the safety of those in the air and on the ground, the Port Authority and the FAA have obviously made the correct decision.
Again, the U.S. Special Operations Daggers and Rangers Parachute Jump will be re-scheduled at a future Lead the Way Fund event.
Thank you for understanding.
The Boston Marathon is in its 114th running and “Team Ranger”, consisting of 5 Army Rangers, will be participating to raise funds for the “Lead the Way Fund”. Donate to the “Lead the Way Fund” in the name of those Rangers below.

Come join us as we celebrate our Country and those who defend it. God Bless America!
Needless to say Jimmy did it again! The spirit of “Regs” and his brothers in arms brought over 650 people to the west side of Manhattan on November 16, 2008 for the 2nd annual “A Run Down Hero Highway.” Some 5 days after Veterans Day we descended on the sacred ground near Ground Zero and Lady Liberty and took off on a 4.5 mile “fun/run” with nothing but smiles and strides of pride. In addition to friends, families and notable patriots who were with us last year, the 2nd annual run drew countless supporters from the 75th Ranger Regiment, FDNY, NYPD, The West Point Lacrosse Team, a Royal Marine and various other veterans groups. This was a patriotic display for the ages.
The day was started with introductory remarks from Jim Regan followed by a legendary rendition of The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America from Joey Horrowitz. This year we were sent off by Fire 1, the NY Fire Boat, which showered red, white and blue water cannons into the Hudson to celebrate the occasion. Runners and walkers of all shapes, sizes and ages took to the path donning the #10 race day tee-shirt and patriotic costumes galore. Congratulations to Ben Fenton for winning the best costume award! Ben was awarded a flag that was flown over the United States Capitol the day before the run, in honor of Jimmy Regan. The flag came with a certificate of authenticity signed by Stephen T. Ayers, AIA (Acting Architect of the Capitol). Post run we had another blow-out celebration at the Chelsea Brewery where Joey provided live music entertainment and we toasted to Jimmy and the protectors of our Country. This year the press caught wind and News Channel 11 captured the moments with live feed and interviews that were aired on the evening news.
We can’t thank enough all the supporters who joined us for this occasion. Over the last two years, “A Run Down Hero Highway” has raised close to $50,000 for the Lead the Way Fund and the families of our fallen or disabled Army Rangers. This event, which serves to capture the spirit and reach of Jimmy Regan’s legacy will happen every year around Veterans Day and will continue to grow in depth and enjoyment for all who are involved. We would like to give special thanks to Jamie Brodsky, Daniel Roediger, Keating Crown, Andrew Stroud, Daniel Hauber and Chris Haunss for their tireless efforts to making this day a success. We would also like to thank Alison Haunss and the News Channel 11 team, Scott Rosenzweig and Matt Zash from the Lax Hut for their sponsorship and tee-shirts, Joey Horrowitz, Mary McHugh, The Regan Family, The Hotarek Family, Bob Petersen, Bob Smith and all of the other volunteers who helped make this day so special.
Please be on the look out for details of the 3rd annual “A Run Down Hero Highway!”

On September 18th, the Lead the Way Fund held its Second Annual Golf Outing and Dinner. The purpose of the day was to raise funds in support of Army Rangers and their families, to show gratitude for their many sacrifices and to generate awareness of the emotional, physical and financial challenges many of these military families face as a result of their service to our country. Participants enjoyed a round of golf on one of three beautiful courses, Plandome Country Club, Sands Point Golf Club and Wheatley Hills Golf Club. They were later treated to an evening of cocktails and dinner at Plandome Country Club, which included amazing live and silent auctions.
In addition to the Fund’s Board of Directors and over 400 participants, honored guests in attendance included Gen. William “Buck” Kernan, retired 4-Star General who has served both as former Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic (SACLANT) and former Commander in Chief, U.S. Joint Forces Command; Mr. James Lorraine, Director, USSOCOM Care Coalition; Medal of Honor Recipient and member of the Ranger Hall of Fame, U.S. Army Ranger, Paul Bucha and uniformed U.S. Army Rangers from 1st Battalion (1/75) – Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.
Guests had the opportunity to talk with the Rangers, learn more about them and thank them personally for all they have done and continue to do in the name of freedom. The day was a wonderful success in every respect, and was an important and meaningful way for the community to honor the memory of Sgt. James J. Regan, a lifelong resident of Manhasset who was killed in Iraq in 2007.

About 6,500 Attended From Early Morning Until the Last Firework Faded in the Sky
The Lead The Way Fund Lacrosse Day of Champions was an extraordinary day in a town that rightfully prides itself on its extraordinary lacrosse legacy. On Saturday, April 19, Manhasset hosted the first ever Lead The Way Lacrosse Day of Champions fundraiser, established in honor of its local resident, U.S. Army Ranger Sgt. James “Jimmy” Regan, who was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb in February, 2007.
To honor Jimmy’s sacrifice his family established The Lead The Way Fund to raise funds in support of families of U.S. Army Rangers who have died, have been disabled, or who are currently serving in harm’s way around the world. The Lead The Way Fund helps ease the financial burdens faced by the soldiers and their families and provides medical needs, flying a wife to be at her husband’s hospital bedside during recovery, or fill the “gaps” that the Army and other services do not cover.
The other sponsor and benefactor of this great day was the newly established Indians Rock Community Foundation which is raising money to help build, repair and beautify the community sports facilities for the community.
Hosting a lacrosse event seemed like a natural idea as Regan was an All American high school lacrosse star at Chaminade and a Duke letterman from 1999-2002. In the course of his Duke playing days he earned the Academic ACC Award and ACC All Tournament honors by scoring four goals and two assists during the NCAA championship game.
A battalion of volunteers organized the day in a way that the visiting Army officers must have found impressive. With about 6,500 in attendance from early in the morning until after the last firework streaked across the sky, the day was flawless in execution.
When six United States Special Operations Command Black Daggers and two US 75th Regiment Army Rangers waltzed down from the sky, red jet streams following their graceful descent, to perfect landings on the field, it was a clear signal that this was no ordinary day.
Between games Regan’s parents, Jim and Mary, along with his sisters, Maribeth, Colleen and Michaela and Sgt. Jimmy Regan’s fiancée, Mary McHugh, took the field to thank the crowd and volunteers for their amazing support. “This is a day we know Jimmy would have loved,” Regan, Sr. told the crowd. “There is a lot of pride amid the sadness.”
Lacrosse fans were treated to an amazing line-up of games featuring fired-up players who treated each event like a championship game. The day kicked off with the Manhasset 8th grade girls and boys travel teams each playing in a mini tournament.
Cheers could be heard up and down Plandome Road when number one ranked Duke entered Ed Walsh Stadium. Moments later more cheers erupted when number 8th ranked Army entered with their black and gold helmets gleaming. This was not just another NCAA exhibition game; this was Jimmy Regan’s alma mater, Duke, playing his Army alma mater. Other than the Duke or Army alumni many Manhasset residents found themselves unsure of which of Regan’s teams they should root for, so they cheered for both. After all, both teams were playing for Jimmy. With ESPNU broadcasting the game live, eventually Duke won the 10-6 match showcasing why they are ranked number one in scoring offense and number 6 in defense in the country.
Another Regan match-up was the game between the Manhasset Indians (ranked 3rd in the country) vs. the Chaminade Flyers, ranked 8th in the country. With what seemed an almost equal number of fans for both teams, Chaminade proved itself the better team that day, winning 11-5.
A highlight of the afternoon was the Manhasset Girl’s Varsity team playing St. Anthony’s. Regan’s youngest sister, Manhasset senior #10 Michaela Regan scored four goals and one assist, helping her team to a 14-11 victory on this extraordinary day of Manhasset lacrosse history.
As the sun set the New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department took the field and delighted the fans with their speed, power, and lacrosse prowess. The crowd was once again on its feet cheering for both teams, and the NYPD Finest won the contest.
Standing along the sidelines thoughts turned to the phrase from our national anthem, “And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air” and the ultimate price Sgt. Jimmy Regan paid for his country as fireworks streaked across an inky black sky and marked an end to this historic Manhasset event.
Both The Lead The Way Fund and the Indians Rock Community Foundation want to thank their volunteers who devoted their time and efforts to make the day a success. Very special and warm thanks also go to all Manhasset residents for their participation and patience during the day, The Town of North Hempstead, the Manhasset Park District, the Manhasset School Board, Manhasset School District Superintendent, Charlie Cardillo along with Manhasset High School Athletic Director, Carolyn Pagnano and the entire athletic office. Also instrumental in making the immense logistics of the day run smoothly was Manhasset School District Facilities Director, Armand Markarian, and his talented team of Joe Monda and Theresa Manieri.
The leaders of both organizations look forward to updating the community shortly with the financial success of the day.
The Lead The Way Lacrosse Day of Champions was an opportunity to honor one of Manhasset’s bravest sons, as well to celebrate with friends and extended Lacrosse family an extraordinary day of lacrosse and being together working toward the greater good.

In November 2007 The Lead The Way Fund teamed up with the community of Manhasset in organizing its third morale package drive for the US Army Rangers. Individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools and various local organizations throughout Manhasset and surrounding communities contributed plenty of the requested items which included snacks, toiletries, DVD’s, games, and lots of artwork and letters of support created by local students. On November 6th, LTWF held a “packing party” at Plandome Country Club and 117 packages stuffed with goodies were lovingly assembled and sent to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in time for Thanksgiving.
As a result of this ongoing collaborative effort, nearly 250 morale packages have been sent to the Rangers since March 2007. These morale package drives provide to the grateful citizens of Manhasset a way to show their support and appreciation to our military while honoring the memory of Jimmy, their hometown hero, in a meaningful and significant way.
LTWF plans to sponsor its fourth morale package drive in March of 2008. To support us in this project or to find out how to plan a morale package drive in your community, contact us!

On Saturday, December 1, 2007, the Munsey Park Women’s Club hosted its annual philanthropic dinner dance in honor of Jimmy Regan and to benefit the “Lead the Way Fund.” This well-attended holiday event drew over two hundred guests to the elegant North Hempstead County Club.
The evening was a success for the Fund, which was created in honor of Sgt. James J. Regan, a member of the U.S. Army Rangers, who was killed in action in the Iraq War, in February 2007. The amounts raised will go to aid Rangers and their families.
Manhasset residents, family and friends from near and far, including particularly, members of Jimmy’s military family of all ranks, were treated to a special night of reflection and celebration. The evening featured raffles, a sumptuous dinner and speeches by Jimmy’s father, James Regan, and by Colonel Gary Luck and General William F. Kernan (Ret.). The gala featured a live auction conducted by Munsey Park’s favorite auctioneer, Steve Corwen and dancing continued to well past midnight.

A few weeks before Veteran’s Day several of Jimmy’s Duke lacrosse teammates decided to remember Jimmy by having a run alongside the Westside Highway in Manhattan. The idea quickly evolved into the “Run Down Hero’s Highway” and on November 11th, over 400 people gathered to run 4 miles in memory of Jimmy and in support of the Lead the Way Fund. Jamie Brodsky, Keating Crown, Drew Stroud, Dan Hauber, and Daniel Roediger truly organized a wonderful event. As everyone arrived, they were given t-shirts and race numbers, #10, Jimmy’s number when he played at Duke. Everyone had been invited to participate in the most patriotic costume contest for the run and so we were joined by Uncle Sam, an American Eagle, and two Captain America’s, as well as several other red, white, and blue costumes. Before the run, Jim Regan addressed the crowd reminding everyone of the example Jimmy had set serving our country as well as the needs of the Rangers who continue to serve. Special thanks to Joey Horowitz as he played a very moving rendition of God Bless America and the race began. A few trailblazer’s led the way and everyone followed along the race route. The route traveled down the Hudson River Park, past Ground Zero with a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. This hallowed ground of lower Manhattan on West St., affectionately deemed “Hero Highway” as many people used this rout to escape the 9/11 attack on our country. The youngest participant of the race was Jimmy’s four week old cousin, Molly Regan, traveling by stroller. Dan Hauber, one of the race organizers, must have run at least 8 miles as he continually doubled back to join different groups of runners in order to make sure everyone was having a fun time. Even more impressive, the previous weekend he completed the NYC marathon (also in memory of Jimmy.) After the race the crowd gathered for a group picture and then moved quickly out of the cold into the warmth of the Brass Monkey for breakfast and song with entertainment provided by Joey Horowitz. What a special day!

On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Lead The Way Fund held its inaugural golf outing at Plandome Country Club in Manhasset, North Hempstead Country Club and Sands Point Golf Club in Port Washington. Picturesque blue skies and warm breezes greeted volunteers, guests and more than 260 golfers as they converged on three beautiful courses to participate in what was to be a very special and memorable day. For some, it was a day to be outside and enjoy the terrific weather. For others, it was a chance to get out with buddies for a good round of golf; and for others it was an opportunity to entertain colleagues. But for everyone, it was, first and foremost, a way to show gratitude and support to our military, in particular, the US Army Rangers.
The Lead The Way Fund was established in memory of Sgt. James Regan, a lifelong resident of Manhasset, who was killed in Iraq on Feb. 9, 2007 while serving with the US Army Rangers. Its purpose is to provide assistance to Rangers and dependents of Rangers who have died, been disabled or who are currently serving in harm’s way around the world. Jim Regan, founder and president of the Lead The Way Fund, along with his family, the Hotarek family and some close friends, organized this event with the goal of raising money and awareness of the fund. He also viewed it as a great way to gather friends, neighbors and colleagues to honor the Army Rangers, and to celebrate the life of his son.
After the tournament, the festivities continued at Plandome Country Club where more than 450 people gathered for cocktails, dinner and both silent and live auctions. Highlights of the evening included rousing and inspirational speeches by honored guests—retired Four Star General Bryan Douglas Brown who is the former commander of Special Operations Command, U.S. Government and Jim Lorraine, who is the director of the U.S. Special Operations Care Coalition. An Army Ranger video showed the elite soldiers “in action,” and auctioneer Donny Ross skillfully fueled the flames of the bidding war among the many eager participants during the live auction.
Throughout the evening there were repeated comments and discussions between attendees regarding the timeliness of such an event and its proximity to the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, which so profoundly affected the community of Manhasset. “I think it’s just really appropriate that we’re all gathered here for a cause like this the same week as September 11,” said one participant. “A lot of people in this town lost friends and loved ones that day and now the troops are over there fighting for us, so this gives us a chance to thank them and show that we understand why they’re over there.
The community’s unwavering enthusiasm and support for this cause was evident throughout the day, from the multitude of eager volunteers who assisted with every aspect of the day, to the many residents and local merchants who so generously donated supplies and gift items for auction. An emotional 10-minute standing ovation was given to the Army Rangers from Ft. Benning, GA who came to Long Island to participate in the day and to honor Sgt. Regan. In its kick-off fundraising event, the funds raised for the Lead The Way Fund surpassed everyone’s loftiest hopes and expectations. One hundred percent of the money raised will go directly toward helping U.S. Army Rangers and their families. Toward the end of the evening, Mary Regan, Jimmy Regan’s mother, summed up the all-around success of the day when she said, “It was just a perfect day from start to finish. I know Jimmy was smiling down on all of us.”
