The Story Behind the Stone: Sgt. James J. Regan 🇺🇸
A Wall Street future traded for the ultimate sacrifice. James J. Regan had a golden path laid out before him, but he chose a life of profound purpose and duty.
Born in Manhasset, NY, James was a standout talent. At Chaminade High School, he was an All-American in lacrosse and an All-State Scholar in football. His excellence earned him a lacrosse scholarship to Duke University, where he pursued an economics degree, helped drive the Blue Devils to two ACC championships, and reached the Final Four. A lucrative career in finance was virtually guaranteed. 📈🥍
But the clear blue sky of September 11, 2001, changed everything. Deeply moved by the attacks on his home state, James made a quiet, resolute decision. He walked away from the allure of Wall Street and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2004.
He didn’t just serve; he embraced the grueling challenge of becoming an elite Army Ranger. As a member of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, James deployed twice to the rugged mountains of Afghanistan before his final tour in Iraq.
Tragically, on February 9, 2007, during a combat patrol in northern Iraq, the 26-year-old Sergeant’s vehicle was struck by an IED. He made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation he had so ardently chosen to defend. 🦅
Today, his spirit lives on through a powerful living legacy:
✨ Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund: Established by his family and friends, this vital organization supports Rangers and their families through targeted initiatives.
🪨 “Regs Rock”: His memory is permanently etched at the Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation’s 9/11 Memorial.
A beloved son, brother, fiancé, scholar, athlete, and warrior. James lived and died by a code of honor, proving that true greatness is measured not by what one accumulates, but by what one is willing to give. 🇺🇸🤍
